Audubon California

GoPro camera catches a unique view of a pileated woodpecker on a suet feeder.

Wow, what a great catch with the GoPro. Have you ever seen a Pileated Woodpecker? If not then maybe you have heard one. Its drumming is very loud, especially if one happens to be on the side of your house doing that drumming. Most often though it sounds like someone striking a tree very quickly with a hammer. They are very cool birds with their big red heads. The only difference in the markings between the adult males and females is that the males have a red line from the bill to the throat (as you see in the video) and in adult females these are black. It is also the largest woodpecker in America almost the size of a crow. They are the Woody Woodpecker of cartoons.

Tell Jamie Dimon to give Gloria Takla a loan modification with principal reduction

Gloria Takla is 72 years old. She lives alone in her home in Redwood City, CA. An accomplished German Expressionist artist, Gloria was once able to support herself by selling her paintings. Since the economic downturn, Gloria has been struggling to make her mortgage payments and relying on her Social Security checks and the income she gets working as an in-home support service provider, taking care of a woman with Alzheimer’s disease. Now Gloria is facing foreclosure. Chase Bank says they will sell her home at auction on April 9, 2012.

Gloria has tried to work with Chase. She has asked the bank to give her an affordable loan modification and a principal reduction. She has sent in her paperwork sixteen times and gone to their offices to meet with Chase bankers. Up until now, Chase has refused to give Gloria a fair deal. The stress of this ordeal has wreaked havoc on Gloria’s health, resulting in an immune disorder.

The fact of the matter is that Gloria doesn’t deserve to lose her home. She invested her life savings, $150,000, in the home as a down payment. Gloria was steered into a predatory loan by a banker at Washington Mutual, which was subsequently bought by Chase, because the debt-to-income ratio of her loan was disproportionate.

Gloria is a member of the grassroots community organization Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment (ACCE) which, along with Occupy San Jose and Occupy Redwood City, has organized four protest marches since November of 2011 where over 50 demonstrators marched into Chase Bank branches in San Jose and Redwood City and demanded that the bank give Gloria a fair deal.

Despite Gloria’s and ACCE’s efforts, Chase continues to refuse to give Gloria an affordable loan modification with principal reduction. That’s why we are calling on you to tell Jamie Dimon, “Do the right thing! Give Gloria Takla an affordable loan modification with principal reduction!”

USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map

USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map.

Every ten years the U.S. Department of Agriculture releases a new map that helps gardeners know what plants to plant and the best time to plant them. Every ten years that map changes. Climate change is changing the way we plant our gardens and could even change what we plant in our gardens. Has your garden changed? Are you planting different plants than you did 10 or 20 years ago?

Race against the tide: Bravery of young mother who stayed by her horse’s side for THREE HOURS after getting trapped in mud ‘like quicksand’

What an amazing story of love and friendship. This was the terrifying moment a brave young mother battled to keep her beloved horse calm as sea water closed in on the animal after he became trapped in mud ‘like quicksand’. Exhausted and mud-splattered, Nicole Graham clung to her trapped horse Astro for three hours keeping his head high in a race against the tide. The 78-stone show horse had sunk into quagmire-like mud and was facing the prospect of drowning as the water rose around them.

FrankenCorn, Monsanto’s GM Corn Sold at Walmart

FrankenCorn, Monsanto‘s GM Corn Sold at Walmart

This disturbing development comes courtesy of both Food & Water Watch and Sum Of Us, which recently drew attention to the issue by creating petitions against Walmart’s potential sale of the corn.

Though Monsanto’s GM sweet corn contains three genetically-engineered (GE) traits that have never been used in food eaten directly by people, and that have never been properly tested, Walmart still intends to quietly stock its produce shelves with this phony corn in the very near future.

Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s have rejected Monsanto’s Bt corn, how about Wal-Mart?

In a recent campaign alert (http://sumofus.org/campaigns/walmart-monsanto/), Sum Of Us explains that immense consumer pressure has already resulted in commitments from Whole Foods Market, Trader Joe’s, and General Mills not to use the new GM corn in any of their products.

But as of the announcement, Walmart has made no such commitment, presumably because of the company’s close-knit relationship with Monsanto, a “match made in hell” that Food & Water Watch has humorously dubbed “Walsanto” (https://www.facebook.com/WalsantoWatch?sk=info).

But there is still time to stop Walmart’s stocking of Monsanto’s latest GM poison which, if successful, has the potential to completely destroy the viability of the entire crop. If Walmart rejects the GM corn, many others will likely follow, which will result in farmers refusing to plant it.

It is a simple supply and demand situation, but one that is complicated by the fact that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) refuses to mandate that any GMOs be labeled, which means millions of people consume them all the time without knowing it.

This is why YOUR help is needed to spread the truth about both GM sweet corn and GMOs in general to your friends, family members, neighbors, and coworkers.

You can also sign this petition by April 1, 2012, asking Walmart not to stock Monsanto’s GM sweet corn:

Carrot Muffins

There are times I love having a fresh glass of carrot juice in the morning, the only problem is what to do with all that left over pulp from the carrots? It always seems such a shame to throw all that goodness into the compost pile for the worms to eat. One of my solutions to this problem has been these wonderful carrot muffins. What better use of grated carrots than to make something sweet and yummy with them, and these muffins are oh so yummy. They are nice and moist from the carrots and apple, and the coconut and walnuts give them nice texture and flavor. Really easy to make too. A treat to go with that morning cup of coffee, and it didn’t cost you $2.00 + for a previously frozen muffin at your local coffee shop.

1/2 cup walnuts or pecans coarsely chopped and toasted if you like.

2 cups raw carrot (about 3 peeled and grated)

1 large apple peeled and grated

2 cups all-purpose unbleached flour or 1 1/2 cups all-purpose and 1/2 cup whole wheat flour.

1 1/4 cups granulated white sugar

3/4 teaspoon baking soda

1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder

1/2 teaspoon  salt

1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

1 cup coconut (sweetened or unsweetened, I used freshly graded)

3 large eggs

3/4 cup  canola or corn oil

1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Place rack in center of oven. Use paper liners or spray 18 muffin cups with non-stick cooking spray.

Toast your walnuts or pecans for about 5 – 8 minutes or until lightly browned and fragrant. Let cool, then chop coarsely ( I use my large kitchen knife).

Peel and finely grate the carrots and apple. Set aside.

In a large bowl whisk together the flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and ground cinnamon. Stir in the nuts and coconut. Set aside.

In a separate bowl whisk together the eggs, oil, and vanilla extract. Fold the wet ingredients, along with the grated carrot and apple, into the flour mixture, stirring just until moistened. Evenly divide the batter between the prepared muffin cups (an ice cream scoop is perfect for this, one scoop per cup and you’re done). Bake for 20 – 25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

Remove from oven and let cool on a wire rack. After about 10 minutes remove the muffins from the pans and cool completely on a wire rack.

Makes 18 standard-sized muffins.

Don’t over beat your muffins! Only mix until moist. Remember you can stir your dry ingredients as vigorously as you want, and you can beat the wet ingredients to a froth if you like , but when it comes to putting the two together, do it very gently, as you don’t want to disturb the little air bubbles responsible for making your muffins rise!

They Want You Dead…

I see that evil and corrupt have joined forces to further taint our food supply with poisons.

Monsanto Investor Bill Gates Says GMO Crops Needed to Fight Starvation

Bill Gates, the heavy Monsanto investor who purchased 500,000 shares of the biotech giant in 2010, has been touting Monsanto’s genetically modified creations as a tool that is necessary to prevent starvation in poor nations. The same poor nations where thousands of farmers routinely commit suicide after being completely bankrupt by Monsanto’s overpriced and ineffective GM seeds. The same company that we recently exposedto be running ‘slave-like’ working conditions, forcing poor workers to operate the corn fields for 14 hours per day while withholding pay.

According to Gates, this is the company whose GMO crops are going to save the world from starvation. Of course along with ‘saving the world from starvation’, GMO crops also bring along a large number of unwanted health and environmental effects. A prominent review of 19 studies examining the safety of these crops found that consumption of GMO corn or soybeans can lead to significant organ disruptionsin rats and mice – particularly in the liver and kidneys.
